ARTIST STATEMENT

Ultimately it’s about the paint...

There’s something magical about a loaded paintbrush emptying its contents. The process is a practice of burying and excavating; covering the deeper paint layers then scraping and wiping away. The question, “what lies beneath?" is always on my mind. Fortunately, I have a short memory and am surprised during the excavation; sometimes pleasantly so. My mark making is often very spontaneous and at other times quite deliberate. After years of drawing the human form the figures are usually carefully planned but then parts disappear into and background. My figures, their backgrounds and the tile series are only a foil for the fundamental elements used in most 2-D art; value, temperature, line, color harmonies and the illusion of space.
